Allen, Texas (April 13, 2012) - Enjoy a spring celebration of “Literacy and the Library” sponsored by the Friends of the Allen Public Library Endowment Fund at Watters Creek Friday, April 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will kick off with special presentations from Boy Scout Troop 131 and Girl Scout Troop 8550.  Activities include children’s story time readings of Ducky by Caldecott Award winning author Eve Bunting given by retired Allen school teacher Tonya Moore and a Spanish reading of El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) by Nobel Prize winning Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez given by Patty Huesca, PhD. Families will also enjoy a rubber ducky race and balloon art. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Twin Fiddles.

The Endowment Fund will accept cash or check donations during the event. Watters Creek discounts from participating merchants will be awarded for donations of $50 or more; donors of $100 will receive those discounts and a free one-year membership to the Friends of the Library; and donors of $200 or more will receive those discounts, Friends membership, and a $25 Watters Creek gift card.  The first six donors of $100 or more will receive a copy of Love in the Time of Cholera, autographed by translator Edith Grossman.

The Endowment Fund’s primary goal is the long-term excellence of Allen’s Public Library.  Supported by Mayor Steve Terrell, the Allen Library Board, and the Friends of the Library, the event is underwritten by Watters Creek, Andrews Distributing, E.T. and Gayle Boon, Ruth Pringle, and Bill and Eileen Tollett, and is sponsored by American National Bank of Texas, Arium Financial, and Worley and Cindy Stein.

The Friends of the Allen Public Library Endowment Fund is also the beneficiary of Watters Creek’s “Change for Charity” program for the month of March, which donates a portion of proceeds from street side meters.  To date, the Watters Creek “Change for Charity” program has donated over $55,000 to local area non-profit organizations.
